We have been reading through the alphabet this year in our homeschool preschool. It has been a fun way to get to know new books and new authors!

*note: we did not get to read all of the books on the list. A couple of them are still sitting on the shelf on hold at our library, which is closed to do the Corona Virus. I will update this page once we are able to read them all! These books looked good, but I am not sure since we didn’t get to read them yet. They are marked with an asterisk!

A hilarious tale of a surprising mixup!

Ribbit by Rodrigo Folgueira
This is one of my favorites! A cute story of a cross cultural communication mixup.

Yours Truly, Louisa by Simon Puttock
An adorable story about an unusually tidy pig! She must be an Enneagram 1 🙂

A Pig, A Fox, and a Box by Jonathan Fenske
This is a Penguin Learn to Read book and winner of the Theodore Seuss Geisel Award. Sophie thought this one was hysterical.

Sprig the Rescue Pig by Leslie Crawford
A cute story of pig who makes daring escape from a pig truck and finds a new home.

Pigs to the Rescue by John Himmelman
Some zealous pigs try to be “helpful” around the farm.

Pigs by Robert Munsch
A girl learns just how smart pigs are in this classic Robert Munsch book. We changed the word “stupid/dumb” to “silly.”

Small Pig by Arnold Lobel
Small pig leaves home in search of some nice, soft mud after the farmer’s wife does too much tidying on the farm.

The Mercy Watson Series, Tales from Deckawoo Drive, A Piglet Named Mercy by Kate DiCamillo
You will LOVE Mercy, the porcine wonder. We cannot get enough of these hysterical and surprisingly tender books! They are a great read aloud for age 4 or 5 and up!

Talk about the sounds that the letter “P” makes.

Ideas for Biblical Integration

Share the story of the Prodigal son from Luke 15. It was when the Lost Son was eating pig food that he came to his senses and realized that he needed to repent and return to his father’s house. Sin is nothing more than piggy food, but our Father offers us a welcome home and a feast!

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.  Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate.  For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate. Luke 15

Share this illustration to explain the difference between the sin nature and the new nature that God gives us when we are born again into His family.

I heard a pastor share this illustration once:

You can bring a muddy pig inside and give it a bath. It will be nice and clean. But if you let it back outside, it will run right back the mud, because that is what pigs do. They wallow in the mud. They love the mud. It is in their nature.

But if you or I go out and wallow in the mud, the first thing we will want to do is to get inside and get clean, because that is what we do. It is in our nature.

That is what Jesus does in us. We used to prefer the mud and muck of sin. But now that He has made us new, we want to be clean. Even if there are times that we stumble in sin, our core desire has changed. We desire to be washed clean.

Jesus is the one who washes us clean. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Any time we sin, we can run to Him!

 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:7-9

 

I am praying now that your children and mine would be born again into God’s family. That they would flee sin and run to Jesus, who purifies us from all unrighteousness and brings us into the family of God! We don’t have to eat piggy food (sin); the Father offers us a feast!

“Come, everyone who thirsts,
    come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
    come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
    without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
    and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
    and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
    hear, that your soul may live;
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
    my steadfast, sure love for David. Isaiah 55: 1-3
