My 2024 Book List

Here is a list of books I read this year! I hope this list will provide some future reading material for YOU!

Farming/Homesteading Books

Floret Farm’s Cut Flower Garden by Erin Benzakein
Floret Farm’s A Year in Flowers by Erin Benzakein
Miraculous Abundance by Perrine and Charles Hervé-Gruye
The Lean Micro Farm by Ben Hartman

I enjoyed learning more about gardening systems and planting timing from The Lean Micro Farm. Ben Hartman is a true Market Garden systems engineer. We don’t plan to sell our produce, but if we did, he lays out a great plan for making a full time market garden income on only a couple acres.

Miraculous Abundance helped me grow in understanding permaculture systems. The application of this on our homestead has been to integrate our chickens, our garden, and our fruit tree grove. This winter, we are letting the chickens into the garden to till, aerate, and fertilize the land. In the spring, we will close them off from these areas while new seeds germinate and get established. Later in the summer, we can let them back in the garden to help with pest control and fallen fruit clean up.

Parenting/Homeschooling Books

Scattered Minds by Gabor Maté
Hold on to Your Kids by Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Maté
Standing on the Promises by Doug Wilson
The Four Hour School Day by Durenda Wilson
The Convivial Homeschool by Mystie Winckler

The Convivial Homeschool was our Classical Conversations Momma’s Book Club selection this fall. It was a helpful reminder that God is more interested in my sanctification and the sanctification of my children than a perfect, pinterest-worthy homeschool day.

This book gave my heart a healthy dose of realism: I shouldn’t be surprised when things don’t go as perfectly and smoothly as I envision them. I shouldn’t be surprised that I sin and my children sin. We live in a fallen world. It also gave my heart a healthy dose of Gospel truth: God is not surprised at all the imperfections in our lives and homeschool. He has already made provision for us through Jesus who forgives us of our sins and sends His Holy Spirit to remind us of His truth and give us strength to get up and try again. Like Mystie Winckler, the author, says, “We get to Repent. Rejoice. Repeat.”
